What Personal Data We Collect & Why

  1. Comments
    When visitors leave comments, we collect data entered in the comment form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to aid spam detection. An anonymized hash of your email may be provided to the Gravatar service to check for an existing profile picture. After comment approval, your profile picture is visible publicly next to your comment.

  2. Media Uploads
    If you upload images, avoid including embedded location data (EXIF GPS), as it can be extracted by others.

    • Comment cookies: Save your name, email, and website for one year.

    • Login cookies: Stay for two days; “Remember Me” extends this to two weeks.

    • Screen-options cookies: Last one year for display preferences.

    • Post‑editor cookie: Remembers the post ID of your most recent edit for one day.

    • Temporary cookie: Used on login pages to check if your browser accepts cookies; it expires when the session ends.

  4. Embedded Content
    Articles may embed videos, images, or other content from external sites. Interacting with this embedded content collects data in the same way as visiting those sites directly.

  5. Spam & Security Tools
    We use automated services (e.g., Akismet) to detect spam. These tools collect comment metadata (IP address, user-agent, name, email, etc.).

How We Use & Share Your Data

  • We do not sell personal data.

  • We share data only with:

    • Hosting and CDN providers, email/service vendors.

    • Spam/security services like Akismet.

    • Law enforcement or regulators when required.

    • Legal counsel or auditors under NDA.

  • For password resets, we include your IP address in reset emails.

Data Retention

  • Comments & metadata: Retained indefinitely to manage follow-ups without moderation delay.

  • User profiles: Stored until changed or deleted by the user or admin.

  • Form submissions/support tickets: Retained for at least 7 years for contractual, financial, or legal obligations.

Your Rights

GDPR (EEA residents): You have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, port, or object to personal data.
CCPA/CPRA (California residents): You can request your data, correct or delete it, and opt out of disclosures/sharing (“sale” defined broadly).
